Winn waited for Priscilla to answer the phone. “Hello, Mother. We found a nice little rent house just a few blocks from the shop. It has two bedrooms and good size kitchen with a screened-in porch across the front.”

Priscilla looked at the packed cardboard boxes in the kitchen. “Is there a living room and a decent tub in the bathroom?”

Winn impatiently rubbed a hand across his face. “Yes, your chairs and radio will fit perfectly in the living room and there’s a claw foot tub. I think you’ll really be happy with it.” He looked at Hope and rolled his eyes as if to say, ‘if she could be happy with anything.’ “Will you trust my judgement so I can go ahead and rent it? Places are hard to come by.”

His mother sighed and shifted her eyes toward Eddie who was antsy with excitement. “Oh, I suppose I have no choice in the matter. Edward can’t stand still; he wants to talk to you.”

Eddie eagerly took the phone. “H-hello, Winston. Did you find a place; is it c-close to your print shop? When can we move in?”

Laughing, Winn said, “Yes, yes and I’ll find out if Floyd is available Saturday. I’ll ride the bus over there to help you on moving day. And then the three of us will ride back on the bus. How does that sound?”

“Very good. Thelma and I w-will finish packing and be ready.”

Winn turned from the desk after saying good-bye to Eddie. “Now, I need to make the first month’s rent and make sure next Saturday is okay with the landlord before calling Floyd.”

Hope reached up and smoothed his hair back. “So far everything is working out right on schedule, Winn. Maybe before Saturday, you can get a haircut.”

Saturday morning, Winn was on the first bus north out of Taft with a haircut a bit too short to his liking. I sure miss Butler’s Barber Shop. I miss a lot of things about Woodsboro, but I’ve always adjusted to new places. I hope Mother will be satisfied with the house, but I suspect she’ll find fault with something.

By the time he walked to Victoria Street, the moving van was there. Floyd and his two helpers were sitting in the front yard. “Good morning, Floyd. You beat me here.”

“Yessah, we wanted to get started early, but Mizz Prichard didn’t want to let us in. She said we had to wait outside ‘til you got here.”

“For crying out loud.” He tried the door, it was locked. Banging on it, he said, “Mother, Eddie, open the door.”

Eddie unlocked it. “T-thank goodness, you’re here, Winston. Mother wouldn’t allow me to let Floyd in. You know how she is about…about…” He glanced at Floyd and lowered his voice. “…people of African descent.”

Floyd either didn’t hear or pretended he didn’t. “Can we get started now, Mr. Prichard?”

Winn propped the door open. “Yes, let’s get this show on the road without further delay.”

Priscilla sat in her wing-back chair in the living room dressed as if she were going to church.
